Spring 2012
Schedule
LEAN SIX SIGMA PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION:

Many organizations are implementing Lean and Six Sigma  to improve products and services to their customers, and as a means to eliminate waste and improve profit.

Initially, LSS  methods were developed and applied to manufacturing operations only. Today, these same methods are being applied successfully to all manner of service activity including retail, healthcare, education, government, military and engineering.

In their roles, as designers and builders of the facilities and systems used by manufacturers and service providers, engineers must understand the goals and methods of their employers and clients. Also, to provide the best service in a competitive marketplace, engineers should understand LSS methods in order to eliminate waste to improve their own businesses.

The focus of this seminar is learning about LSS implementation and success stories from experience professional engineers.

Guest Presenters:  Edward Liggett, P.E., Master Black Belt and Doreen Rhineberger, Quality Manager at Avery Dennison

ENGINEERING ETHICS:

Professional Engineers have a duty to hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public.

Over the years, various engineering societies have adopted codes of ethics, and state jurisdictions have enacted laws to govern the practice and conduct of Professional Engineers. Unfortunately, only relatively recently have engineering schools offered formal ethics training as a standard part of their curriculum.  As a result, some engineers have had little or no formal training in professional ethics.

This seminar is designed to serve as an introduction to the NSPE fundamental canons and rules of Ethics, as well as a review of laws pertaining to the practice of engineering in Ohio. Seminar lecturers will include fellow PEs who are also practicing attorneys and an Engineering Ethics instructor from Cleveland State University.

Attendees will receive a binder containing the seminar presentation material, a comprehensive glossary of relevant terms, helpful reference materials and the ethics codes of various engineering societies for future reference.

Guest Speakers: Mike Ashar, P.E., J.D. and Greg Cada, P.E., J.D.

ENGINEERING TESTING:

Regardless of how carefully engineers design and build devices, products, systems and structures which make up our modern technological society, there will always be some level of performance uncertainty to address.

What and how to test and what to accept in results are always challenging questions for engineers. Under-testing, or inadequate testing, may not reveal certain weaknesses, vulnerabilities or limitations of a design over its full range of use. Over-testing wastes time and money and may not yield any beneficial improvement in a design or product.

Careful control of test environments, and a strategy for evaluating the interactive effects of multiple factors at various levels is essential in validating, improving and optimizing designs.

This seminar will deal with the fundamentals of proper testing, as well as reviewing some modern technology that is being employed by local test specialists. We will review the theory and practice involved in DOE (Design of Experiments) and a strategy for assessing the adequacy of a “one off” special system design.

Presenters: Stan Prybyla, PhD. (Plus TBA speaker from local testing lab)

As always, all Lorton seminars include a binder with complete copies of all on screen slides, additional reference material, a CD ROM with related papers and links for further learning, lunch with hot and cold beverages throughout the seminar, a signed and stamped completion certificate by a NCEES registered provider and a comfortable learning environment with expert speakers and net working opportunities.
